'The Exchange' – St. Julian's

The Exchange is a new Financial and Business Centre at the Mercury House site in St Julian’s. The development incorporates 20,000 m2 of office space in three buildings, the highest being 18 storeys above street level, and 7,500 m2 of retail and leisure space on three levels.

The vision for The Exchange is to  become the base for several financial institutions, such as  banks, insurance companies, fund managers and advisers including accountancy, audit and legal firms. The site will have five levels of underground parking with over 650 public car parking spaces. There will be a large 2,000 m2 open space with an intimate piazza atmosphere, free access to the public and a domed food court.

After supplying lighting solutions for The Exchange’s sister development – Pender Gardens, Calleja was invited to help with The Exchange’s new Sales and Marketing space in St. Julians.

Working to design specifications supplied by the client, for the inside we recommended Egoluce Ghost trimless, recessed fittings. These luminaires are subordinate to the light they emit and integrate with the gypsium ceilings so effectively that they hardly register as a design feature.

We supplemented these with 3 OMS Pendent fittings that provide economical ambient lighting, assume the role of interesting architectural elements and highlight the sales desk as a focal point of the space. The pendent suspension system allowed us to determine the exact height to hang the luminaire – ensuring optimum glare control.

Outside we used surface liner light fittings by Civic to accent the texture  of the mosaic wall and pebble-covered floor.
